भागीरथी का बेटा अब पंद्रह साल का होने को है। उसने अपने बेटे को बड़ा करने में बहुत कष्ट झेले हैं। भागीरथी याद करती है जब पूरन का जन्म हुआ था। तब ही से उसने पिता का मुंह नही देखा था।

क्योंकि पूरन के जन्म से पहले ही भागीरथी को उसका पति छोड़ गया था। वो कहां गया उसका क्या हुआ किसी को कुछ पता नहीं। कोई कहता था वो मर गया तो कोई कहता था कि उसने दूसरा बियाह कर लिया होगा इसलिए वापस नहीं आया। भागीरथी ने अपने भाग्य को कभी दोष नहीं दी, वो बस यही कहती थी कि बिधाता सब देख रहे हैं। मुझे जो भी सुख दुःख मिल रहे हैं वो मेरे पिछले जन्मों के कर्म है। जब मेरा पूरन बड़ा हो जायेगा तो ये दिन बदल जायेंगे। पढ़ने में बहुत होशियार है मेरा बेटा, वही बदलेगा मेरा भाग्य। ये आस हर मां करती है अपने बेटे से।

भागीरथी को उसके गांव वाले बहुत सहयोग करते हैं। जब पूरन छोटा था तब भागीरथी के पास ना कोई काम था और ना कोई साधन जिससे वो अपना जीवन यापन कर सके। गांव वालों ने भागीरथी को दो गाय दी जिससे उसका जीवन आसान हो जाए। आज भागीरथी के पास छह गाय और दो भैंस भी है। जिनके दूध से दही और घी बनाकर बेचती है और आराम से मां बेटा अपना जीवन यापन कर रहे हैं। भागीरथी उसके बेटे को अच्छे स्कूल में पढ़ा रही है वो ये नहीं चाहती कि बेटा भी अपने पिता की तरह अपनी जिम्मेदारियों से भाग जाए। वैसे भागीरथी का बेटा पूरन हर काम में मां का हाथ बंटाता है और इस बात का ध्यान रखता है कि मां को कभी किसी तरह की चिंता या परेशानी ना हो।

भागीरथी का जन्मदिन है और उसे याद भी नहीं है। पूरन जानता था कि मां को अधिक काम के कारण आज का दिन भी याद नहीं रहेगा। इसलिए उसने मां को पड़ोस में भेज दिया और जल्दी जल्दी उनकी पसंद के एक दो व्यंजन बना लिए। जब मां वापस आई तो पूरन ने मां को चौकी पर बैठाया और उनकी आरती उतारकर पैर छुए। भागीरथी के आंखों में आसूं आ गए, जब पूरन ने मां को मिठाई का टुकड़ा खिलाकर उनका मुंह मीठा किया तब वो बोली तू तो मेरा संपूर्ण है, तेरे होने से मैं पूरी हो जाती हूं। मां के आंसू पोंछकर पूरन बोला हां मैडम क्या खाएंगी आज आप। क्या आप आज खीर पूड़ी खाएंगी। भागीरथी हंस पड़ी बोली सर आपने जो भी बनाए होंगे हम वही खा लेंगे। मां और बेटे का समय बहुत खुशी से बीत रहा था। आजकल भागीरथी पूरन के लिए एक स्वेटर बुन रही है लेकिन उससे छिपाकर। छिपाकर इसलिए क्योंकि भागीरथी उसे अचंभित करना चाहती थी। जब पूरन स्कूल जाता था तभी उसे निकालती थी और उसके घर आने से पहले उसे एक बक्से में रख देती थी।

दिसंबर का महीना शुरू होते ही भागीरथी अपनी पड़ोसनों के साथ मिल गुपचुप तैयारियों में जुटी है। पूरन का पंद्रहवां जन्मदिन है, इसे भागीरथी धूमधाम से मनाना चाहती है। उसका पड़ोस बहुत छोटा था आस पास बस चार पांच घर ही थे, उन्हीं के साथ भागीरथी अपने सुख दुख साझा करती थी। वो सब उसके लिए बहुत मायने रखते थे। तैयारी करते करते आज दस तारीख भी आ गई और आज ही तो है पूरन का जन्मदिन। स्कूल जाते समय मां से कुछ पैसे मांगे तो उसे जवाब मिला कि तुम्हारे बैग में पैसे रख दिए हैं। पूरन खुशी खुशी स्कूल चला गया। भागीरथी ने अपने आयोजन की उसे भनक भी नहीं लगने दी। पूरन दोपहर में जब स्कूल से वापस घर आया तो उसे बिल्कुल भी नहीं लगा कि मां ने कोई योजना बनाई है उसके जन्मदिन के लिए। इसलिए वो अपने स्कूल के दोस्तों के साथ जन्मदिन मनाने चला गया रेस्टोरेंट में। पूरन रहता तो गांव में था, लेकिन शहर से सटा हुआ ही था उनका गांव। इसलिए उसे आने जाने में कोई दिक्कत नहीं थी।

ये पहला अवसर था जब पूरन अपने जन्मदिन के दिन यूं कहीं बाहर गया था भागीरथी के बगैर। भागीरथी को लगा कि पूरन शाम होने से पहले ही घर आ जायेगा। इसलिए उसने पड़ोस की कुछ महिलाओं को बुलाकर खाना बना लिए सबके लिए। अब तक रात के आठ बज चुके थे और सब पूरन की राह देखते देखते थक गए। भागीरथी आरती सजाकर बैठी थी, कि पूरन आएगा तो उसकी आरती उतारकर लंबी उम्र की कामना करके उसे अपने हाथों से बनाया हुआ स्वेटर उपहार में देगी। पूरन के समय पर घर न पहुंचने के कारण सब उदास हो गए। लेकिन भागीरथी जल्दी से खड़ी हुई और सभी के लिए खाना परोसने लगी। बोली पूरन को कल आशीर्वाद दे देना लेकिन अभी आप सभी खाना खाकर जाओ।सबके चले जाने के बाद भी भागीरथी दरवाजे पर ही बैठी रही। गांव में सभी जल्दी सो जाते हैं, तो सन्नाटा पसर चुका था। झींगुरो की आवाजें तेज हो रही थी। पूरन की राह देखते देखते भागीरथी बैठे बैठे ही सो गई उसके एक हाथ में पूजा की थाली थी और गोद में स्वेटर रखी थी। पूरन गांव की तरफ मुड़ा तो उसे दूर से ही रोशनी जगमगाती नजर आई।

वो जैसे जैसे घर के करीब आ रहा था उसे बहुत दुःख और ग्लानि होने लगी। अंदर जाने के लिए उसके कदम नहीं उठ रहे थे। हिम्मत करके जैसे ही वो घर के अंदर दाखिल हुआ मां को इस तरह इंतजार में बैठे हुए सोते देख उसके आंसू आ गए। पूरन मां के पैरों के पास बैठा और बोला मां, इतना सुनते ही भागीरथी बोली आ गया तू संपूरन। अपना नाम संपूरन सुनकर पूरन को और जोर से रोना आ गया। बोला माफ कर दो मां मुझे।

मैं तुम्हें छोड़कर अब कभी नहीं जाऊंगा। आपने मुझे बताए क्यों नहीं कि आप इतना बड़ा आयोजन कर रहे हो, मैं कहीं नहीं जाता, बीच में ही भागीरथी बोल पड़ी तू आज जाता नही तो मुझे पता कैसे चलता कि तू बड़ा हो गया है। पूरन कुछ नहीं बोला। भागीरथी बोली अब अफसोस करने से कोई लाभ नहीं पूरन। बीता समय वापस नहीं आएगा, बहुत रात हो गई है अब सो जा कल सुबह तुझे स्कूल भी जाना है। पूरन बोला मां ......... भागीरथी ने पूरन का माथा चूमी और उसे गले लगाकर जन्मदिन की बधाई दी।

Bhagirathi's son is now about to turn fifteen years old. He has suffered a lot in raising his son. Bhagirathi recalls when Puran was born. Since then he had not seen his father's face.

Because Bhagirathi was left by her husband even before Puran was born. No one knows where he went or what happened to him. Some say that he died and some that he must have remarried, that is why he did not come back. Bhagirathi never blamed her fate, she just said that the Creator is watching everything. Whatever happiness and sorrow I am experiencing is the karma of my previous birth. These days will change when my Puran grows up. My son is very smart in studies, only he will change my destiny. Every mother expects this from her son. Bhagirathi is greatly supported by his villagers. When Puran was young. Bhagirathi had neither any work nor any means to support himself and his son. The villagers gave two cows to Bhagirathi to make his life easier.

Today Bhagirathi also has six cows and two buffaloes. Whose milk is used to make a curd and ghee and sell it and mother and son are living their lives comfortably. Bhagirathi is teaching her son in a good school. She does not want her son to run away from his responsibilities like his father. However, Bhagirathi's son Puran helps his mother in every work and takes care that her mother never face any kind of worry or problem.

It's Bhagirathi's birthday and she doesn't even remember. Puran know that mother would not even remember today because of her overwork. So he sent his mother to the neighbourhood and quickly prepared one or two dishes of her choice. When the mother came back, Puran made her sit on the stool and performed het aarti and touched her feet. Tears welled up in Bhagirathi's eyes, when Puran sweetened her mother's mouth by feeding her a piece of sweet, she said, "You are my completeness,with your presence I become complete." Wiping mother's tears, Puran said, yes madam, what will you eat today ? Will you eat kheer puri today ? Bhagirathi laughed and said, sir we will eat whatever you have prepared. Mother and son were having a very happy time. Nowadays Bhagirathi is knitting a sweater for Puran but hiding it from him. By hiding it because Bhagirathi wanted to surprise him. She would take it out when Puran went to school and put it in a box before he came home.

As soon as the month of December begins, Bhagirathi along with her neighbours is secretly busy in preparations. It is Puran's fifteenth birthday, Bhagirathi wants to celebrate it with pomp. Her neighborhood was very small, there were only four or five houses around, with them Bhagirathi shared her joys and sorrows. They all meant a lot to him. While making preparations, today the tenth has arrived and today itself is Puran's birthday. While going to school, when he asked his mother for some money, he got the reply that she had kept the money in his bag. Puran went to school happily. Bhagirathi did not even let him know about her plan. When Puran came back home from school in the afternoon, he did not feel at all that his mother had made any plans for his birthday. So he went to a restaurant to celebrate his birthday with his school friends. Puran lived in a village, but his village was adjacent to the city. Therefore he did not face any problem in commuting.

This was the first time that Puran had gone out anywhere on his birthday without Bhagirathi. Bhagirathi felt that Puran would come home before evening. So she called some women from the neighborhood and cooked food for everyone. By now it was eight o' clock at night and everyone was tried of waiting for Puran. Bhagirathi was sitting after arranging the aarti , hoping that when Puran comes, she will perform his aarti and wish him a long life and will gift him a sweater made with her own hands. Everyone become sad because Puran did not reach home on time. But Bhagirathi quickly stood up and started serving food to everyone. She said, bless Puran tomorrow but for now you all have your food and go. Even after everyone left,Bhagirathi remained sitting at the door. There was silence in the village as everyone went to sleep early. The sounds of crickets were getting louder. While waiting for Puran. Bhagirathi fell asleep while sitting, she had a puja plate in one hand and a sweater in her lap. When Puran turned towards the village, he saw lights shining from a distance.

As he was getting closer to home, he started feeling very sad and guilty. His steps were not rising to go inside. As soon as he gathered courage and entered the house, he burst into tears after seeing his mother sleeping while waiting. Puran sat near mother's feet and said, Mother, on hearing this Bhagirathi said you are here Sampuran. Hearing his name Sampuran made Puran cry even louder, said forgive me mother.

I will never leave you again. Why didn't you tell me that you were organizing such a big event ? I don't go anywhere, in between Bhagirathi said, you go today otherwise how would I know that you have grown up. Puran did not say anything. Bhagirathi said, there is no use in regretting now, Puran. The past will not come back, it is already late, now go to sleep, you have to go to school tomorrow morning. Puran said mother ......... Bhagirathi kissed Puran's forehead and hugged him and wished him happy birthday.🎂🎂
