आज शरद पूर्णिमा है, अम्मा जी अपनी बहुओं को समझाती रहती थी कि कौन से त्यौहार पर किस तरह पूजा - पाठ की जाती है और कौन से नियम का पालन करना जरूरी होता है

             अम्मा जी अब तक चार बार पूछ चुकी है कि चंपा आई कि नहीं। चंपा काम करने आती है पिछले दस सालों से। हर करवाचौथ पर अम्मा जी बहुओं के साथ - साथ चंपा के लिए भी करवाचौथ की पूजन सामग्री और साड़ी लाती हैं।

          

पिछले कुछ सप्ताह से चंपा कुछ चुप - चुप सी है। पूछने पर कुछ बताती नहीं, लेकिन आज अम्मा ने उसे रोककर बहुत जोर देकर पूछा कि क्या हुआ चंपा, तू क्यों इतनी उदास है।

            

अब उसके आंसू बह निकले और सुबकते हुए कहने लगी, जिस पति की लंबी आयु के लिए मैं बरसों से करवाचौथ का व्रत कर रही हूं, वो पति ना कभी उसे समझा और ना उसकी उसे फिक्र है। हमेशा शराब के नशे में धुत्त रहता है। सारी - सारी रात गाली गलौच करता है। अब तो मारपीट करना उसकी रोज की आदत हो गई। पीठ से साड़ी का पल्लू हटाकर दिखाई तो अम्मा जी के मुंह से एक ही शब्द निकला, हाय राम! उस निर्दयी को जरा सी लाज ना आई। उसके हाथ नहीं कांपे कोई ऐसे मारता है अपनी पत्नी को! 

अम्मा जी ने चंपा के जख्मों पर मरहम लगाया और उसे घर जाकर आराम करने को कहा। कल करवाचौथ है, याद है ना! हां अम्मा जी मुझे याद है, इतना कहकर चंपा घर चली गई।

          

अगले दिन घर में सुबह से चहल - पहल थी। पड़ोस की महिलाओं का आना जाना लगा रहा। शाम होते ही महिलाएं अपनी पूजा के थाल लेकर आ गई, अब तक चंपा भी आ गई थी। चंपा ने इसी घर से अपना करवाचौथ शुरू की थी, तो नियम से पूजा भी यही करती थी। पूजा - पाठ खत्म करके सभी अपने - अपने घरों को चल दिए, चंपा ने भी विदा ली।

सुबह का अखबार आ चुका था, अम्मा जी, अम्मा जी ये देखिए अखबार में क्या खबर आई है! अम्मा जी ने जैसे ही अखबार हाथ में लिया, खबर देखकर अम्मा हैरान थी, बोली ये क्या किया तूने चंपा। जिस सुहाग की लंबी उम्र के लिए तुमने इतने वर्षों तक व्रत रखा उसको करवाचौथ के दिन ही मार डाला। 

             

हां अखबार में यही खबर छपी थी। चंपा ने करवाचौथ की रात अपने पति को केरोसिन डालकर आग लगा दी, जिससे अगले दिन अस्पताल में उसकी मौत हो गई। चंपा को आजीवन कारावास की सजा सुनाई गई।

Now her tears started flowing and she started saying soberly, for whose long life I have been fasting for Karvachauth, that husband never understood her and neither did he care about her. He is always drunk and abuses all night. Now beating has become his daily habit. When the pallu of the saree was removed from the back, only one word came out of Amma's mouth, Hi Ram! That ruthless person did not feel the slightest shame, his hand did not tremble, someone beats his wife like this.

Amma ji applied ointment on Champa's wounds and asked her to go home and take rest. Tomorrow is Karvachauth, don't you remember ? Yes Amma ji I remember, Champa went home after saying this. 

           

The next day there was a lot of activity in the house since morning. Neighbouring women kept coming and going. In the evening, the women brought their plates of worship, till now Champa had started her Karvachauth from this house, so worship used to do the same according to the rules. After finishing the worship, everyone went to their respective homes. Champa also left.

         

The morning paper had arrived. Amma ji, Amma ji ! Look, what is the news in the newspaper ? As soon as Amma ji took the newspaper in her hands, Amma was surprised to see the news, said what did you do to Champa. For whose long life you fasted for so many years, you killed him on the day of Karvachauth. 

           

Yes, this news was published in the newspaper ! Champa set her husband on fire by pouring kerosene on the night of Karvachauth. Due to which he died in the hospital the next day. Champa was sentenced to life imprisonment.
