कभी कभी कुछ बातें हमारे दिल को छू जाती है। जैसे किसी शायर की ये दो लाईन बिल्कुल सटीक व्याख्या करती है सुख और दुःख की। कि - दुःख को बहुत सहेजकर रखना पड़ा हमें, सुख तो किसी कपूर की टिकिया सा उड़ गया। जब हमारे जीवन का हर पल दुखों से भरा हुआ हो और उस समय छोटा सा खुशी का पल हमें इतना बड़ा सुख महसूस होता है जैसे इसी एक पल के लिए दुखों को सहना पड़ा हो हमें। प्रिया अपने जीवन में थोड़ी खुशी ही तो चाहती थी शादी के बाद। ख़ैर ! यही तो जिंदगी है, सुख के साथ दुःख रहता ही है। तभी तो वो एक दूसरे के आगे पीछे चलते हैं। ठीक वैसे ही प्रिया और लाखन भी एक दूसरे के आगे पीछे ही चल रहे थे। दोनो की शादी को ग्यारह साल हो गए। लेकिन आपस में तालमेल ना होने के कारण उनकी गृहस्थी सुचारू रूप से ना चल सकी।

प्रिया तो लाखन से शादी भी नहीं करना चाहती थी क्योंकि लाखन शराबी था। लेकिन सगाई हो चुकी थी तो किसी ने भी प्रिया की बात पर ध्यान ही नहीं दिया। शादी हो गई और प्रिया अपनी ससुराल आ गई।

लाखन में शादी के बाद भी कोई परिवर्तन नहीं आया। अपनी आदतों में बदलाव की कोई कोशिश नही किया उसने। रोज ही शराब पीकर आता और घर में गाली - गलौच करके सबको परेशान करता था। अब प्रिया पर उसका गुस्सा अत्याचार का रूप लेने लगा था, क्योंकि जब प्रिया लाखन से कहती थी कि तुम शराब पीना छोड़ दो, तो इस बात पर चिढ़कर लाखन प्रिया को पीटने लगता था। उसके माता पिता विवश होकर बस देखते रहते थे। क्योंकि शराब पीने के बाद लाखन माता पिता का भी अपमान करने में पीछे नहीं रहता था। शादी को छह महीने हो गए, प्रिया अब मां बनने वाली है। घर के कलह से परेशान प्रिया ने मन ही मन ये निर्णय ली कि वो इस बच्चे को जन्म देकर ऐसे नारकीय जीवन नही देगी। उसने अपने बच्चे को जन्म ना देने का निर्णय ली। पति को प्रिया ने ये नही बताई कि वो मां बनने वाली है। अपना सामान बांधकर प्रिया अपने मायके आ गई। यहां आने के बाद भी प्रिया ने अपना गर्भपात करवाने वाली बात ना अपनी मां को बताई और ना ही भाभी को। प्रिया अकेली इस फैसले को नहीं ले सकती थी, इसलिए असमंजस में थी कि क्या करे और कैसे। ऐसे ही प्रिया के दिन बढ़ते गए और प्रिया के गर्भ को अब तीन महीने हो चुके हैं। अब प्रिया इस बात के लिए जिद पर अड़ गई कि उसे तो किसी भी हाल में गर्भपात करवाना ही है। क्योंकि लाखन के अत्याचारों से परेशान होकर प्रिया अब इस रिश्ते को भी खत्म करना चाहती थी।

हम जो सोचते हैं क्या वो सच होता है ? कभी होता है और कभी नहीं। प्रिया का गर्भपात करवाने का कोई भी प्रयास सफल नहीं हुआ। क्योंकि उसे इस कोशिश में सात माह बीत गए और दो महीने बाद ही वो उस बच्चे को जन्म देने वाली है, जिसे वो इस दुनिया में आने से पहले ही खत्म करने की दर्जनों कोशिश कर चुकी थी। आज वो दिन भी आ गया जब प्रिया को अस्पताल जाना पड़ा। उसने एक बेटे को जन्म दी, लेकिन उसका बेटा उतना स्वस्थ नहीं था जितना कि एक नवजात शिशु को होना चाहिए। अब अपने कमजोर बच्चे को देखकर प्रिया रो रही थी और अपनी करतूत पर पछता रही थी। ख़ैर ! अब प्रिया का बेटा जतिन तीन साल का हो गया है लेकिन उसकी बुद्धि का विकास नहीं हो रहा है, उसे देखकर ऐसा ही लगता है, और ये सच था। मानसिक रूप से स्वस्थ नहीं है जतिन, प्रिया ने बहुत सारी गलत दवाओं का सेवन की थी उस समय जब वो गर्भवती थी। उसी वजह से जतिन का मानसिक विकास रुक गया। एक बार ससुराल से आने के बाद प्रिया अपने पति के पास वापस नहीं गई। लेकिन लाखन समय समय पर आता रहा प्रिया के पास अपने बेटे जतिन से मिलने, और हर बार प्रिया से यही कहकर जाता था कि तुम कभी घर वापस मत आना। जबकि मां बनने के बाद प्रिया ये चाहती थी कि जतिन को माता पिता दोनों का प्यार मिले। लेकिन पति की बातों को अनसुना भी नहीं कर सकती थी, आखिर उसके आत्मसम्मान का प्रश्न था।
