कर्ज लेना कोई परंपरा नहीं है लेकिन कभी - कभी मजबूरी इस मोड़ पर ले आती है कि हमें कभी अपने सगों से तो कभी अनजानों से भी कर्ज लेना पड़ जाता है।

ऐसे ही कर्ज में डूबा बलिया का परिवार उस दिन को कोसता है जब उन्होंने गांव के पंडित से कुछ रुपए का कर्ज लिए थे। अब वो कुछ हजार रूपए उन्हें किसी पहाड़ से मालूम पड़ते हैं क्योंकि गांव में काम की कमी है और छोटा सा खेत का टुकड़ा इतना भी अनाज नहीं देता है कि साल भर की पूर्ति हो जाए। बलिया के तीन बच्चे है, बड़ी बेटी लाली उसके बाद भूरी और सबसे छोटा बेटा रूदन। नाम से ही अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है कि रूदन रोता ही रहता है। गावों में गरीबों के यहां जब बच्चा पैदा होता है तो कोई पोथी पंचांग नही देखे जाते ना ही पंडित से नाम राशि पूछी जाती हैं। यहां तो बच्चा जिस परिवेश में पैदा हुआ उसी से मिलता जुलता उसका नाम रख देते हैं। जब बलिया की बड़ी बेटी का जन्म हुआ उस वक्त उसका चेहरा एकदम सेब की तरह लाल था और वह जब भी रोती तब भी चेहरा लाल हो जाता था इसलिए उसे प्यार से लाली बुलाने लगे। छोटी बेटी जन्म से ही एकदम गोरी थी उसके बाल तक भूरे थे इसलिए उसे भूरी बोलते थे।

यहां रूदन का किस्सा थोड़ा अलग है। जन्म के दो माह तक रूदन हर समय बस रोता ही रहता था। उसे चुप कराने के सभी यत्न असफल रहते थे। समझ ही नहीं आता था कि क्या उपाय किया जाए। उसके रोने की आवाज सुनकर पड़ोसी भी परेशान हो जाते थे। बलिया से कहते अरे ! रूदन को चुप कराओ नहीं तो हम भी रोने लगेंगे। ऐसे रूदन को नाम मिल गया, सभी उसे रूदन कहकर बुलाने लगे। गरीब परिस्थिति में तीन बच्चों का लालन पालन बहुत कठिन हो रहा था। बलिया अपनी पत्नी कजरी से हमेशा विचार विमर्श करता था कि मैं मजदूरी करने किसी बड़े शहर में चला जाता हूं। लेकिन रूदन अपने पिता के बगैर नहीं रहता था। मजबूरी थी कि बलिया परिवार को छोड़कर जा भी नहीं सकता था।

अचानक रूदन को तेज बुखार हो गया, जो उतरने का नाम ही नहीं लेता था। कजरी हर वक्त रूदन की सेवा कर रही थी, उसके इलाज के लिए पैसों की कोई व्यवस्था नहीं हो पा रही थी। बुखार की वजह भी पता नहीं चल रही थी क्योंकि मौसम भी ऐसा नहीं था कि बुखार आ जाता। रूदन घर में ही खेलता रहता था, क्योंकि अभी वो सिर्फ दो साल का है। बुखार के साथ साथ रूदन के पैर में फोड़ा भी हो गया। देखने पर पता चला कि रूदन के पैर में कांटा चुभा है जो बहुत गहरे चला गया है। फोड़े से भी पस निकलने लगा। घरेलू उपाय करके कजरी उसके घाव को ठीक करने की कोशिश कर रही है। बेटे की ऐसी हालत देखकर बलिया बहुत परेशान है। उसने तय किया कि गांव के पंडित के पास जमीन गिरवी रखकर वो अपने बेटे को इलाज के लिए शहर ले जायेगा। लेकिन कजरी इस बात के लिए तैयार नहीं थी, क्योंकि थोड़ा थोड़ा पैसा उधार लेकर अब तक वो रकम बड़ी हो गई। पंद्रह सौ रुपए का कर्ज मजदूरी करके कैसे दे पाएंगे। ये सोचकर ही कजरी का दिल बैठ जाता था।

कजरी के घरेलू उपाय अपना असर दिखा रहे थे। नीम की छाल घिसकर रूदन के पैर में हुए घाव पर लगाकर उसे रोज कुछ नीम की पत्तियां खाने को देती थी। बुखार तो अब नही था लेकिन रूदन का शरीर बहुत कमजोर हो गया था। वो बिस्तर से उठ नही पाता था, अपने बेटे की ये हालत बलिया से देखी नही जाती थी। बलिया ने तय किया कि सप्ताह भर के लिए मजदूरी करने शहर जायेगा ताकि रूदन को कुछ पौष्टिक भोजन खिला सके जिससे उसे ताकत मिले और वो जल्दी स्वस्थ हो जाए। कजरी से बिना कुछ कहे बलिया सुबह जल्दी शहर के लिए रवाना हो गया। आगे क्या हुआ जानने के लिए अगला अंक जरूर पढ़ें ...........

Taking loan is not a tradition, but sometimes compulsion bring us to such a point that sometimes we have to take loan from our relatives and sometimes from strangers also.

Similarly, the debt - ridden family of Balia curses the day when they took a loan of a few rupees from the village priest. Now those few thousand rupees seem to come from a mountain, because there is a lack of work in the village and a small piece of land does not produce enough grain to meet the needs of the whole year. Balia has three children, daughter Lali, Bhuri and youngest son Rudan. It can be inferred from the name itself that Rudan keeps on crying. When a child is born to the poor in the village, no pothi almanac is seen, nor is the priest asked for its name. Here, the child is named after the environment in which he was born. When Balia's elder daughter was born, her face was as red as an apple, and even when she cried, her face turned red, so she was fondly called Lali. The younger daughter was completely fair from birth, her hair was brown, that's why she was called Bhuri.

Here the story of Rudan is slightly different. Till two months after birth, Rudan used to cry all the time. All efforts to silence him were unsuccessful. They could not understand what remedy should be taken. Neighbors also used to get upset on hearing his crying. Says to Balia, hey ! Silence the Rudan, otherwise we will also start crying. Such Rudan got a name. Everyone started calling him Rudan. It was becoming very difficult to bring up three children inthe poor condition. Balia always discussed with his wife Kajri that I should go to a big city to work as a labourer. But Rudan could not live without his father. There was compulsion that Balia could not even leave the family.

Suddenly Rudan got high fever which did not take the name of getting down. Kajri was serving Rudan all the time, there was no arrangement for money for his treatment. The cause of fever could not be known because even the weather was not such that fever would come. Rudan used to play at home only. Because he is only two years old. Along with the fever, an abscess also developed on Rudan's leg. On seeing it was found that there was a thorn in Rudan's leg which had gone very deep. Pus also started coming out of the boil. Kajri is trying to cure his wound by taking home remedies. Balia is very upset seeing the condition of his son. He decided that he would take his son to the city for treatment by mortgaging the land with the village priest. But Kajri was not ready for this, because by borrowing little by little the amount has become huge. How will you be able to repay the loan of fifteen hundred rupees by working as a laborer ? Kajri's heart sank just thinking of this.

Kajri's home remedies were showing their effect. She used to rub neem bark and apply it on the wound on Rudan's leg and give him some neem leaves to eat daily. There was no fever now, but Rudan's body had become very weak. He could not get up from the bed, this condition of his son was not seen from Balia. Balia decided that he would go to the city to work as a laborer for a week so that he could feed Rudan some nutritious food which would give him strength and he would recover soon. Without saying anything to Kajri, Balia left for the city early in the morning. To be continued................
