रूदन जब से बीमार है तब से लाली और भूरी ही घर के सारे काम संभाल रही है। दस साल की लाली घर के सभी काम बड़ी कुशलता से कर लेती है। मां का ध्यान रूदन से एक पल नही हटता लेकिन नन्हीं सी लाली और भूरी अपनी मां के साथ - साथ रूदन का भी पूरा ख्याल रखती है।

बलिया ने जाते समय लाली से कहा अपनी मां और भाई बहन का ख्याल रखना लाली, मैं जल्दी लौटूंगा। लाली ने पिता के हाथ में रोटी की पोटली थमा दी और बोली आप चिंता मत करना पिताजी मैं मां को और भूरी रूदन को संभाल लूंगी। छोटी सी लाली को बड़ी जिम्मेदारी लेते देख बलिया की आंखों में आसूं आ गए। बेटी को गले लगाया प्यार किया और आंसू पोंछते हुए बलिया चला गया।

पैसों की तंगी को दूर करने के लिए ही बलिया शहर गया था। लेकिन तंगहाली एक दिन में खत्म नहीं होने वाली थी, अब तो हालात और बदतर हो गए थे। मजबूरी में कजरी पंडित से और रुपए उधार लेने गई, पहले तो पंडिताईन ने कजरी से बहुत सारा काम करवाई उसके बाद भी उसे ये नही लगा कि अब कजरी को पैसे दे देना चाहिए। कजरी सूखे मुंह से बोलने की कोशिश कर रही थी कि मालकिन अब पैसे दे दो और मुझे जाने दो। लेकिन आवाज गले में ही रुक जाती थी, चिंतित कजरी बस यही बोल पाई कि कोई और काम बाकी है क्या पंडिताईन। तब अंदर जाकर पंडिताईन दो सौ रुपए लेकर आई और बोली ये ले, लेकिन याद रखना पूरे पैसे एक साथ वापस लूंगी। उस समय कुछ नहीं सुनूंगी मैं, जी पंडिताईन। इतना कहकर कजरी घर आई और फिर लाली घर के लिए राशन रूदन के लिए दूध और बिस्किट लेकर आई।

बलिया को गए हुए एक सप्ताह से ज्यादा का समय हो गया लेकिन अब तक वो वापस नहीं आया। रूदन के पैर का फोड़ा अब धीरे धीरे ठीक हो रहा था, मां का सहारा लेकर रूदन थोड़ा थोड़ा चलने की कोशिश करता था। उसे देखकर कजरी अक्सर बोलती थी अभी तुम्हारे पिताजी होते यहां तो तुम्हे देखकर खुश होते। अभी बलिया वापस नहीं आया था लेकिन पंडिताईन अपने बेटे को भेजने लगी कर्ज का तकाजा करने। कजरी हमेशा यही जवाब देती कि रूदन के पिताजी आयेंगे तब सारा कर्ज उतार देंगे एक ही बार में। अपने मन की दशा किससे कहे कजरी। पढ़ने लिखने की उम्र में क्या बच्चों को मजदूरी के लिए भेजेगी। रूदन को बीमार हालत में छोड़कर कजरी भी नहीं जा सकती काम पर। अब भगवान से एक ही प्रार्थना कर रही थी कि बलिया जल्दी वापस आ जाए, तो जल्दी कर्ज से मुक्ति पाए।

आज पंडिताईन खुद ही आ गई कजरी के घर। कजरी का गला सूख गया कि अब क्या जवाब दे कहां से पैसे दे इस वक्त। हिम्मत जुटाकर कजरी ने हाथ जोड़कर विनती की पंडिताईन से कि आज की मोहलत दे दो मालकिन रूदन के पिताजी अब तो आ ही जायेंगे क्योंकि उन्हें अब पंद्रह दिन हो गए हैं। पंडिताईन घर जाने को मुड़ी ही थी कि बलिया घर आ गया। रूदन के लिए खिलौने और लाली भूरी के लिए कपड़े कजरी के लिए साड़ी सबके लिए कुछ न कुछ लेकर आया था बलिया। लेकिन घर में पंडिताईन को देखकर बलिया समझ गया कि जो सुख का सपना उसने संजोया था वो अभी तो पूरा नहीं हो सकता। क्योंकि जितने दिन भी काम किया था उसकी मजदूरी तीन हजार रूपए मिली थी, जिसमें कुछ सामान लेने के बाद बलिया के पास अब बस बाईस सौ रुपए ही बचे थे। जो कि कर्ज चुकाने में जाने वाले थे। बलिया को देख कजरी को हिम्मत आ गई कि अब वो पंडिताईन के कर्ज से मुक्त हो जायेगी। बलिया ने भी बिना देर के ब्याज सहित पंडिताईन को उसके पैसे दे दिए और कजरी से कहा अब हम कर्ज मुक्त हो गए हैं अब कोई चिंता नहीं। मैं अब अपने खेत में ही काम करके अपने परिवार का पालन पोषण करूंगा।

रूदन का पैर भी अब ठीक हो गया, घरेलू उपचार ने बहुत मदद की। गरीबी और कर्ज किसी अभिशाप से कम नहीं। सभी प्रयास करते हैं कि गरीबी को दूर कर सकें लेकिन सफलता कठिन परिश्रम और समय मांगती है और इसी समय को सरल करने की कोशिश में कभी कर्ज तो कभी मर्ज़ जकड़ लेता है। जिनसे निकलना बहुत मुश्किल हो जाता है। बस मेहनत करते रहो कर्ज़ और मर्ज़ दोनों से बाहर आ जायेंगे।

Rudan's leg is also fine now, home remedies helped a lot. Poverty and debt are no less than a curse.
